Hidden Falls Broodstock Update – July 18
Broodstock currently stands at 75,000 chum behind the barrier net, all volitional entry. The F/V Windwalker and F/V Reiver arrived this morning to actively collect another 50,000 brood fish. Egg takes will begin July 19. We still need another 45,000 fish beyond the 125,000 or 180,000 fish all-in. Spotter pilot reports have ranged from 200,000 to 750,000 chum in the SHA. So far this morning we are not seeing that kind of volume. We also have two cost recovery seiners looking for opportunity. Next update will be tomorrow.

Deep Inlet will be closed July 7th for the seine rotation. This is a drastic action due to Hidden Falls run collapse. We will close until we have approximately 40,000 chum at or near the head of Deep Inlet. Chum will be collected with seine gear and rolled into two net pens for a total of 24,000 brood fish of the Hidden Falls stock. Excess chum at the head of Deep Inlet may be harvested for cost recovery to lessen the burden in August, but the goal is to collect the brood fish and get Deep Inlet open as quickly as possible. Brood fish will be towed to Medvejie hatchery and held for two weeks...

Hidden Falls returns are exceedingly poor so we are discontinuing openings. Otolith samples from Homeshore show better results for Kasnyku and Takatz 4.0 chum strategy compared to regular 2.0 gram fish, but there just isn’t the abundance to make that very meaningful. We are developing a plan for obtaining the chum egg take goal. The best hope is that with the closure sufficient numbers of chum return to Kasnyku. The backup plan to that is 1) Hidden Falls stock at Deep Inlet, 2) using fall Deep Inlet chum to back fill some of the HF egg production, 3) obtain eggs from Gunnuk Creek,...

Eggs taken through August 5 is 138 million; goal is 180 million. It appears there are another 20,000 fish so we expect to get to 160 million for sure, perhaps 170 million. DIPAC is on standby to take the balance as needed.

Hidden Falls eggtakes are continuing at a good pace but it appears there will not be enough broodstock to meet the 180 million egg goal. Currently we have 115 million eggs (August 3) and on that same day coincidentally we had our largest eggtake of the season (12 million). The estimated number of chum being held is about 30,000 which should result in 30 million eggs. We have requested 20 million eggs from DIPAC and another 10 million from AKI. If these requests come through we expect to have 175 million eggs. The distribution of these fry next spring will approximate 55 million at Kasnyku...
