Hidden Falls July 9, 2017
Two independent spotter pilots estimated 100,000 chum at Hidden Falls on July 7 & July 8. Large schools were reported in Kasnyku Bay, Round Island, Waterfall to Pt Turbot, and in Takatz Bay. In order to get a better understanding of run timing and run strength cost recovery will be conducted outside of Kasnyku Bay on Monday or Tuesday. Samples will be taken to establish age structure, average weight, and sex ratio. Results will be used to determine the next step for management of Hidden Falls. Hidden Falls needs 200,000 fish for broodstock assuming no holding mortality. Possible...

The fishing season is off to a mixed start and there is sufficient information to predict what is likely to unfold for the Hidden Falls and early run Deep Inlet chum programs. First Hidden Falls: the first two openings were disappointing but not unexpected. The return to date is about 10,000 chum through June 25th, which is similar to last year and worse than 2015. Therefore, Hidden Falls will not open for the foreseeable future. We will concentrate on broodstock – we need approximately 220,000 adults to fully satisfy our programs at Kasnyku Bay (75 million eggs), Thomas Bay (25...

Deep Inlet opened to Trolling on Saturday. There was some effort by the Troll fleet, although I don’t have catch numbers yet. Sunday was a Seine day; using preliminary numbers it appears approximately 120,000 chum salmon were caught. This was a pleasant surprise and strengthens my belief that the fall run is anomalous in run timing and behavior. It seems likely that this week will see the largest catch of this year’s fall run. Total run Summer (~600,000) and Fall (~600,000) is 1.2 million chum to date. Eggtakes are going well – 24 million eggs through Sunday with 68 million...

Thursday August 25 at 2 pm ADF&G announced that Deep Inlet would reopen on Saturday August 27 beginning with a Troll rotation, followed by Seine on August 28, and Gillnet on August 29. This puts the fishery rotation in the normal sequence for the remainder of the season. Cost recovery should be completed today, August 26. There is something less than 100,000 lbs. remaining. We will make the final tally today and hope to close it out. If we do not complete cost recovery today we may harvest outside of the Deep Inlet THA but within NSRAA’s larger SHA. Broodstock numbers look good at...

The last push to the finish line is expected to occur today. We need 185,000 lbs to complete cost recovery. Almost certainly we will open Deep Inlet on Saturday for Troll, Sunday for Seine, and Monday/Tuesday for Gillnet. This is not official until ADF&G publishes an announcement, which should occur today or tomorrow. ADF&G has been informed of progress each day, and they are aware of need to get announcement out prior to weekend.
