July 15 Weekly update

While returns to SE Cove and Deep Inlet continue near or on forecast, Hidden Falls chum broodstock remains our primary concern at this time.  Few fish have pushed into the inner bay and what spotty information we have received does not indicate a large volume outside of Kasnyku Bay.   While we continue to monitor the numbers returning to Hidden Falls it is becoming clear we need to begin implementing back up brood stock options for Hidden Falls chum.  Our first two options utilizing DIPAC or Port Armstrong brood stock look to be marginal options at best.  DIPAC is already looking at moving...

NSRAA provides three $2,500 scholarships each year. This year’s deadline is being extended, as we received only a single applicant as of the April 15 deadline. The new deadline is May 5, 2019. Hidden Falls – Seine Closed Until Further Notice for Broodstock

Hidden Falls seine openings will not occur after July 12 until broodstock is secure. This may take two to three weeks as we need about 200,000 chum or 190 million eggs for Hidden Falls, S.E. Cove, Thomas Bay, and Deep Inlet release sites. Sex ratio on July 8 opening was 64% likely skewed high due to large proportion of 3 year males. Catch rate and harvest have declined the past few openings. The 3-year old component has been the highest in history, beginning at 5% and rising to 21% on July 8. Hoping this is good omen for next year. S.E. Cove also has a high proportion of 3-year olds. Tip of...

Hidden Falls to Open July 1, 2018

There will be an opening on July 1, 2018 at Hidden Falls. Just under 43,000 chum were caught in the June 25th opening. Sex ratio was 70% male and age structure as follows: 1% six year olds, 59% five year olds, 39% four year olds, and 5% three year olds. Age structure is normal for this calendar date except for the three year olds. Typically we do not see three year olds until later in the run and usually only 2%. Overall, I am very encouraged by this age distribution. Best of luck Sunday.

Hidden Falls’ Takatz Bay to Open July 20, 2017

Currently we have 25,000 chum collected for broodstock behind the barrier in Kasnyku Bay. The Hidden Falls staff took the first 4 million eggs yesterday and continue to pass chum through the barrier net daily. Observations by spotter pilots, fishing boats, and our drone show good numbers of chum in Kasnyku and around Round Island to Pt. Turbot, although the fish move around constantly. Chum have been observed in Takatz as well. Given that the 175,000 chum still needed for broodstock have not been secured and they are moving in and out of Kasnyku I have decided to have a discrete Takatz Bay...
