Hidden Falls and Deep Inlet – June 26 2017
The fishing season is off to a mixed start and there is sufficient information to predict what is likely to unfold for the Hidden Falls and early run Deep Inlet chum programs. First Hidden Falls: the first two openings were disappointing but not unexpected. The return to date is about 10,000 chum through June 25th, which is similar to last year and worse than 2015. Therefore, Hidden Falls will not open for the foreseeable future. We will concentrate on broodstock – we need approximately 220,000 adults to fully satisfy our programs at Kasnyku Bay (75 million eggs), Thomas Bay (25...

Thursday August 25 at 2 pm ADF&G announced that Deep Inlet would reopen on Saturday August 27 beginning with a Troll rotation, followed by Seine on August 28, and Gillnet on August 29. This puts the fishery rotation in the normal sequence for the remainder of the season. Cost recovery should be completed today, August 26. There is something less than 100,000 lbs. remaining. We will make the final tally today and hope to close it out. If we do not complete cost recovery today we may harvest outside of the Deep Inlet THA but within NSRAA’s larger SHA. Broodstock numbers look good at...

There will need to be a closure at Deep Inlet for cost recovery harvest soon, although the exact date is being discussed in the Executive Committee. Final decision on date will be made early next week. Due to the run failure at Hidden Falls (broodstock is secure at 160,000 chum) we will need to harvest an additional lot of chum at Deep Inlet to make up for the income shortfall. Not including what we have already harvested at Deep Inlet, we need to harvest 300,000 additional chum salmon. The DI summer run forecast was 400,000 fish and is on track for hitting that target. The fall run is...

Hidden Falls returns are exceedingly poor so we are discontinuing openings. Otolith samples from Homeshore show better results for Kasnyku and Takatz 4.0 chum strategy compared to regular 2.0 gram fish, but there just isn’t the abundance to make that very meaningful. We are developing a plan for obtaining the chum egg take goal. The best hope is that with the closure sufficient numbers of chum return to Kasnyku. The backup plan to that is 1) Hidden Falls stock at Deep Inlet, 2) using fall Deep Inlet chum to back fill some of the HF egg production, 3) obtain eggs from Gunnuk Creek,...
