Crawfish Inlet is NSRAA’s latest chum salmon program to come online. This year is the first year for 4 year olds from a 13 million fry release (’15) and the second year for 3 year olds from a 27 million fry release (’16). Survival on both these broodyears has been quite high. The return so far has included 100,000 troll caught chum, 220,000 cost recovery chum, and 150,000 common property seine caught chum for a total of 470,000 fish. The 2018 Deep Inlet Schedule was finalized at the spring NSRAA Board of Directors meeting. The schedule will begin a month earlier this season to provide Troll opportunity from early May through mid-June. Seine openings (24-hr) will be occur on May 1, June 3, and June 10 during this period. Gillnet openings (12-hr) will be May 2, June 9 and June 16. The May 1-2 openings are set to meet the 2:1 Seine: Gillnet ratio requirement for May. Chum management will begin on Sunday, June 17. Seiners will fish Sunday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday each week. Crawfish Inlet is in its maiden year for adult returns. Normally we would not expect many 3 year olds but this year is one for the books. We have accounted for over 40,000 fish, most of which has been harvested for cost recovery. A harvest boat will continue to harvest through Saturday. Depending on fish abundance and behavior we may suspend cost recovery for a few days to allow troll opportunity next week.
