NSRAA Board Opposes Baranof Warm Springs Hatchery Proposal

NSRAA’s Board of Directors passed a resolution in opposition to an application for a new salmon hatchery at Warm Springs Bay at the 2018 spring board meeting. The Sustainable Salmon Institute’s proposal has generated a great deal of discussion in the fishing community, among Baranof Warm Spring property owners, and among members of the general public. The site is located approximately 10 miles south of Hidden Falls Hatchery. NSRAA’s resolution can be viewed here, as well as on the NSRAA home page.

Deep Inlet Update – August 29

Deep Inlet opened to Trolling on Saturday. There was some effort by the Troll fleet, although I don’t have catch numbers yet. Sunday was a Seine day; using preliminary numbers it appears approximately 120,000 chum salmon were caught. This was a pleasant surprise and strengthens my belief that the fall run is anomalous in run timing and behavior. It seems likely that this week will see the largest catch of this year’s fall run. Total run Summer (~600,000) and Fall (~600,000) is 1.2 million chum to date. Eggtakes are going well – 24 million eggs through Sunday with 68 million...

Deep Inlet to Open Saturday August 27 for Troll, Sunday Seine……

Thursday August 25 at 2 pm ADF&G announced that Deep Inlet would reopen on Saturday August 27 beginning with a Troll rotation, followed by Seine on August 28, and Gillnet on August 29. This puts the fishery rotation in the normal sequence for the remainder of the season. Cost recovery should be completed today, August 26. There is something less than 100,000 lbs. remaining. We will make the final tally today and hope to close it out. If we do not complete cost recovery today we may harvest outside of the Deep Inlet THA but within NSRAA’s larger SHA. Broodstock numbers look good at...

Deep Inlet Cost Recovery – 100,000 lbs August 15

We had one boat fish at Deep Inlet during the common property opening. Starting after noon the F/V Revival caught 100,000 lbs. Two boats are fishing today. The remaining goal is 1.7 million pounds. Sex ratio from Sunday CR was 56% male. Approximately 20,000 chum were caught in total at Makhnati and Silver Point on August 15, each location had a 7 boat line up.

Deep Inlet to Close 11:59 pm August 6

Deep Inlet will close August 6th at the end of a troll day. The SHA will remain closed to trolling, seining and gillnetting until the cost recovery goal is met. It is expected to be closed for approximately two weeks. The chum goal during the closure has not been set as it will be affected by current cost recovery harvests at Southeast Cove, Hidden Falls (there may be some excess to broodstock), and Bear Cove/Medvejie where we are harvesting small but significant numbers tomorrow. The target number will be determined early next week. However, it is expected that the total number of chum at...
